Von was known for his vivid recollections of life on O-Block—a true storyteller. The record, released last week, is already one of the late artist's most successful records to date.
Produced by Kid Hazel a Slaughter Gang sound architect, both rappers spit a triplet flow over hard production each letting the world know they are not here for games. The video Directed by Jason Joannes and animated by Cartuna depicts animated scenes of Von and 21 as cartoon figures in a whimsical rendition of the O-Block. The story follows the two caricatures of the artist in one-night engagements, joyriding through the city and high-speed police chases.
“Don’t Play That” is the lead single from What it Means to be King, a posthumous album for the artist, and it’s littered with his vicious bars and riveting narratives. With contributions from those who knew Von best, including longtime collaborator Chopsquad DJ and more to be announced in the coming weeks. What It Means to Be King arrives on March 4th via Only The Family/ Empire.
What It Means to Be King is a continuation of Von’s limitless legacy as the greatest storyteller of his generation, he will forever be the pressure music needs. A follow-up to Von’s Gold-certified debut Welcome To O-Block, the album is bittersweet for his fans and longtime supporters but serves as a piece of closure for many.
Long Live King Von, forever applying pressure.
